I teach writing to businessmen and sometimes attorneys. Side-by-side examples of good and bad writing are the best way to clarify a point. I use sentences and short passages from aviation textbooks and other materials. The same material is covered in FAA-published books and articles, and in the privately-published Jeppesen textbooks. I show the same topic "explained" by the FAA idiots, side-by-side with the explanation by competent writers. The first is often impenetrable; the second typically crystal clear, even to non-pilots. Students quickly grasp why govt. writing is so awful, even lethal, and what changes make the same subject easy-to-understand.

Thanks for commenting, Sheila. And I'm so happy you found my tips helpful! By the way, the Eat & Explore cookbook series sounds awesome--such a great idea.

Thanks again!

I'm saving your five suggestions as my own personal reminder when writing our State Hometown Cookbook Series (http://www.greatamericanpublishers.com), but then also passing it on to our sales team. They are working now on a brand-new Eat & Explore State Cookbook Series (http://www.eatandexplore.com), and your suggestions will help with letter writing. Thanks for sharing it with us.

That's a great suggestion, Arthur. Reading great writers (especially Orwell--I love him too!) is an excellent way to learn and improve. Thanks for commenting!

I am always looking out for a book or compilation of examples of ways good writers have used their skills to write clearly particularly on complex ideas or subjects. I can then mimic their style and adopt it into my writing. I get a lot of inspiration from George Orwell's nonfiction writings.
